Award Winning Fashion Designer and Albuquerque Apparel Center President Melissa Lea will explain things 1on1 and teach you how to accomplish your design dreams!
Bring patterns, pictures and/or sketches of your favorite designs and
inspirations along with a list of the designing skills you would like to learn.
Classes are a mix of seam and finishing techniques, pattern drafting techniques using industry tools and constructing your finished garment. All you need to bring is a pattern, thread, pins, scissors, seam ripper, and fabric. Muslin is available for purchase in class.

Fashion Design Classes and Workshops
Various levels of classes are available from learning to set up, operate, and trouble shoot sewing machines
to creating your own patterns from a basic pattern block. Choose a 3-hour workshop focusing on buttonholes, pockets, zippers, and more. Dive in deeper with a detailed sewing class designing the perfect fit and finish of tops, skirts, and pants. Learn to make and manipulate your own patterns. Design Costumes for Film and Theatre.

Curriculum:
Albuquerque Apparel Center School of Fashion Design classes and workshops are designed to meet the busy schedule of the professional, working, or retired adult in addition to teenagers. Each is designed to be complete within themselves, meaning each start and ends with a specific project. They are best taken in the following order, but not required. Students may take any class/workshop at anytime to fit your needs.
THE BASICS: (3 hour workshop) This workshop (THE BASICS) is A MUST! You must know how to properly operate a sewing machine and know how to sew. If you already know how to use a sewing machine, or you are unsure, feel free to contact Albuquerque Apparel Center.
THE DETAILS: (3 hours workshops) The following workshops (THE DETAILS) can be taken in any order. The important thing to keep in mind is all should be taken before continuing to Clothing Construction, Flat Pattern, Undergarments/Corset, etc. classes. These in-depth workshops will not only teach you how to perfect construction, but also help you to choose the appropriate ones to use in later projects and assure your finished garment looks its best.
THE DESIGNS #1: (18 hours classes) The following classes (THE DESIGNS) should be taken in order of their sequence number (1,2,3,4). Degree of difficulty increases with each class section. Please refer to Prerequisites listed within each course description to best prepare you for these classes.
THE DESIGNS #2: The following classes (THE DESIGNS #2) may be taken in any order. Please refer to Prerequisites listed within each course description to best prepare you for these classes.
OPEN DESIGN STUDIO: Open design studio is your opportunity to take advantage of the design studio amenities to complete your class projects. Open Design Studio is free to all registered students throughout their current class duration. Those not registered in a current class may use the design studio at a minimal cost per hour. This is for use of work-space and equipment only. For personal, 1on1 instructions with a garment project, please see Design&Sew 1on1.

Sewing and Machine Basics SMB101Students learn components and operation of a sewing machine and study terms & concepts of different stitches, when to use them, and how to properly sew and press/iron them. Fabric terms and essential sewing notions, materials, supplies are explained. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing.

Buttonholes and Buttons BUT101Students learn about different types of buttonholes and buttons, when to use which type, and how to properly construct them. Proper placement and markings of buttonholes will be performed as well as proper placement and sewing of buttons. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing.

Darts DRT101 Students learn about different types of darts, when to use them, and how to properly sew and press/iron them. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing.

Pockets PCK101Students learn about different types of pockets, when to use them, and how to properly sew and press/iron them. Proper layout of pockets for cutting will be performed as well as transferring pocket markings. Skills in critical thinking,
analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing. Seam Finishes SEF101Students learn about different types of seam finishes, when to use them, and how to properly sew and press/iron them. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing.

Zippers ZIP101Students learn about different types of zippers, when to use them, and how to properly sew and press/iron them. Different types of Zipper Feet for sewing machines are shown and discussed. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing.

THE DESIGNS #1:
Clothing Construction 1 CCS101
|
Flat Pattern 1 FPT101A basic course with the emphasis on precision pattern drafting truing, and cutting skills for the apparel industry. Gain knowledge of pattern drafting terminology, measuring techniques, drafting theory and practices and lay the groundwork for future Pattern Drafting projects. Students develop a series of foundation bodice patterns based on the fit of a standard female size-8 block.
Learn pattern manipulations to achieve various looks/styles, appropriate fitting adjustments, and adding of proper seam allowance to patterns. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing. Class Duration: 18 hours max. Class meets 3-6 hours per class based on your schedule needs until finished. Maximum of 18 hours. $390.00 *Suggested Prerequisites: Sewing Machine Basics SMB101, Seam Finishes SEF101, Darts DRT101, or can show equivalent experience in these areas. (*These may be taken during first 2 weeks while taking Flat Pattern class.) Two years sewing experience preferred. Ability to use Industrial sewing machines and/or working in a production environment is a plus but not a requirement. Must have knowledge of construction techniques using single-needle and serger machines. Capable of sewing a variety of fabrics, a rolled hem and other technical free-hand sewing applications. Pattern making knowledge and skills are a plus.
