Fashion Design Classes
Various levels of classes are available from learning to set up, operate, and trouble shoot your sewing machine
to creating your own patterns from a basic pattern block. Choose a one-day class focusing on buttonholes, pockets,
zippers, or pattern grading. Dive in deeper with a detailed sewing class designing the perfect fit of tops, skirts, and pants. Learn to make and manipulate your own patterns. Design Costumes for Film and Theatre.
Don’t forget undergarments! Study their history and create a corset or other “undie” of your choice.

Curriculum:
Albuquerque Apparel Center School of Fashion Design classes are designed to meet the busy schedule of the professional, working, or retired adult in addition to teenagers. All classes are designed to be complete within themselves, meaning each starts and ends with a specific project. Classes are best taken in the following order.

These first two classes are A MUST! You must know how to properly operate a sewing machine and know how to sew, as well as properly press and iron before taking any class that requires sewing. Accessory Design ACD101
This course covers design and construction specific to fashion accessories, as well as an overview of the fashion accessories industry. Various categories of fashion accessories will be explored in detail, followed by creating of actual accessories. Learn the basic design concepts of fashion accessories, taking into consideration construction,
function, esthetics and the fashion market.

Buttonholes and Closures BHC101
Students learn about different types of buttons, buttonholes, and other closures, when to use them, and how to sew them. Students encouraged to bring in garment they are needing buttonholes or other closures sewn into if they have one. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance.

(Just What I Want) WOVEN FABRICS ONLY FOR THIS CLASS
Do you have a pattern you are dying to sew? Let's Do It! Students construct 1-2 (simple, woven fabric) garment of their choice using a commercial (store bought) pattern. Learn to read and understand commercial patterns. Focus on cutting, stitches, seam finishes, and darts as well as proper pressing/ironing techniques for a clean, professional look. Understand measurements and make fitting corrections. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions completed for taking home to be used for future referencing will be covered if time permits.

Students choose fabrics and construct garments of their own design from patterns completed in Pattern Drafting and/or Draping, as well as a series of samples. Specialty fabrics and creative couture sewing techniques are analyzed. Problem-solving and analytical skills are used to effectively assemble original designs.

Corsets (Undergarments 2) UND102
A continuation of Undergarments I, students choose a specific historical time period of women's underpinnings and research deeper into chosen era and its relationship to the changing shape of fashion. Attention to detail of the process of making a historical corset, including patterning, boning, and finishing. Students will construct one replica of a historic corset or corset-inspired garment of their design.

Bodice
A basic course with emphasis on precision pattern drafting, truing, and cutting skills. Gain knowledge of pattern drafting terminology, measuring techniques, drafting theory and practices and lay the groundwork for future Pattern Drafting projects. Focus on Bodice through flat pattern methods plus Facings, Linings and Interfacing of all patterns drafted. Students develop a series of foundation bodice and sleeve patterns based on the fit of a standard

Torsos and Collars
A basic course with emphasis on precision pattern drafting, truing, and cutting skills. Gain knowledge of pattern drafting terminology, measuring techniques, drafting theory and practices and lay the groundwork for future Pattern Drafting projects. Focus on Torso and Collar through flat pattern methods plus Facings, Linings and Interfacing of all patterns drafted. Students develop a series of foundation torso patterns from bodice blocks based on the fit of a

Undergarments 1 UND101
Students learn about the history of women's underpinnings and their relationship to the changing shape of fashion. Also discussed will be the emergence of underwear as outerwear in the past and today, the history of men's undergarments, the impact of dress reform movements on underwear design, and the impact of historic style on current fashions. Students will construct one replica of a historic corset or corset-inspired garment of their design.

Zippers and Waistlines ZPW101
Students learn about different types of zippers and other various waistline applications, when to use them, and how to sew them into garments. Students encouraged to bring in garment they are needing zippers or other waistline closures sewn into if they have one. Skills in critical thinking, analysis and problem solving applied to apparel construction are emphasized as well as industry-based skills for garment assembly and quality assurance. Sewn samples and instructions are completed for taking home to be used for future referencing.
